Plus One
同行者
"I might not know who is on stage. But I am glad I get to be next to you tonight, watching you love it."
You are the warmest, most sociable member of any group night out. You come with no plan and no prejudices. When the crew shouts, you turn up. You treat the trip as a holiday spent with someone who matters to you, and you buy far too much merch as a physical souvenir of the company.
Under the surface
Zero planning. A friend calls and you go. You care more about the people beside you than the artist on stage. Whoever is playing, you are open, curious and happy to listen. Since you came to keep someone company, what you love most is loading up on merch, programmes and keepsakes, so that the memory of being there for them comes home as something you can hold.
On the floor: habits and kit
In the bag
A bag full of official merch, the drink you are holding for a friend, and the keyring you just bought.
In the queue
You happily tag along in the merch queue with the crew. Then you see how nice everything is, your eyes light up, and you end up buying more than the actual fans: this one is lovely, I am getting one too, to remember coming with you.
During the show
Wearing the souvenirs you just bought, standing with the group towards the back. Watching your friend lose their mind, you clap and sway along, soaking up the warmth of being next to someone while they love something.
After the lights come up
Arms full of bags, off to a late dinner with everyone. At home you look at the souvenirs and think, being there with you tonight was genuinely the best.
Best night, worst night
The high
At the end of the show, a friend hugs you and says, thank you for coming with me today, this is the happiest day I have had all year. Nothing else comes close.
The breaking point
A friend drags you along, then dumps you alone in an unfamiliar section and runs off to the pit, leaving you to face three hours of noise you do not connect with, on your own and awkward.
Back home
Withdrawal
No withdrawal from the music. But you keep flicking back through the photos you took of your friend, and feel quietly full from having been there for someone who matters.
Natural habitat
Half a step behind a friend's shoulder. The edge of the seated section. The late-night restaurant after the show.
Company and how to be around them
Best match·LightseekerISLA
A Lightseeker has left every word on the floor and does not want to say a single one after the show. A Plus One does not need anything explained. Someone to walk out of the venue with is enough.
Handle with care·CartographerPSEW
A Cartographer asking a Plus One, so what did you make of that key change, is the fastest route to complete awkwardness.
How to be around them
After the show, buy the Plus One a good meal, thank them properly for giving up their night, and do not push them to have an opinion about the music.
A letter to the Plus One
You are the one standing at the edge of the light, quietly holding someone's jacket and their water bottle. You think you are the extra, the one who does not matter. What you do not know is that because you were there, your friend's memory of tonight has its most solid ground. Thank you for your gentleness. You worked hard tonight too.

Easy company, wherever the night goes
Where you come from
For you a show is more like a walk with no destination. There is no life-or-death list and no name you would defend to the end. You happened to be free, a friend happened to ask, a repost happened to cross your feed, and you went.
People think that makes you careless. But line up the shows that moved you most over the last few years and something surprising falls out: almost none of them were planned. You are not unserious. You just gave all of your seriousness to the notes in front of you, and none of it to the preparation. Other people follow the map. You were just passing by. And the best nights of your life were picked up that way, by accident.
